📚 3 Books That Can Strengthen Your Christian Marriage

Real growth. Deeper connection. Sacred intimacy.

Marriage, in all its complexity and beauty, is one of God’s greatest tools for shaping us. Yes, I said, God uses marriage to shape us. I didn’t say, marriage is made to complete us, to give us confidence, or to make us…happy.

Instead, marriage reveals our strengths and exposes our weaknesses and this can be a painful process. But it’s meant to draw us closer to one another—and ultimately, to Christ. After all, earthly marriage is a mirror image of God’s relationship with His church. Earthly marriage is intended to be deeply intimate, unabashedly real, and continually transformational, just as our relationship with Jesus should be. So, whether you’re in a season of joy, struggle, or steady rhythm, strengthening your marriage begins with intentional growth.

In the last few months, I’ve been reading every Gary Thomas book I can get my hands on. They’re filled with practical advice and have made a huge impact on the way I think about my relationship with God, my husband, and myself.

If you’ve read my post “5 Books That Changed My Life”, you know I’m passionate about sharing resources that shape me—and Gary Thomas’s work has definitely earned a spot on that list.

1. The Glorious Pursuit: Becoming Who God Created Us to Be by Gary Thomas

I can’t recommend this book enough. This book is all about spiritual transformation—and spiritual transformation is required for a healthy marriage. In my humble opinion, I believe many marriages fall apart not just because of what happens between two people, but because there’s a lack of individual spiritual growth and self-reflection. Instead of doing the hard inner work, it turns into finger pointing and a lot of ‘you should have’ or ‘I shouldn’t have to.’

Without the internal transformation, the same issues just keep showing up. The pattern repeats and you have the same arguments over and over again. Many of us focus on changing our spouse when we are the one’s in need of transformation.

Gary Thomas walks through classic Christian virtues like humility, patience, kindness, and perseverance, and shows how they can be intentionally practiced in everyday life. When we pursue Christlikeness first, we can’t help but become better spouses.

“Marriage doesn’t make us holy by itself—it gives us the opportunity to grow in holiness.”

2. Married Sex: A Christian Couple’s Guide to Reimagining Your Love by Gary Thomas & Debra K. Fileta

Yes, the title might raise an eyebrow—but trust me, this book offers a thought provoking but practical understanding of sex. This is not what you are going to hear from the pulpit on a Sunday morning. This one is candid, compassionate, and biblically grounded. At times, I felt like the book was putting my exact thoughts into words, words I wish I could have said myself. As I read, I learned more about how we gain true intimacy through sex and that was God’s purpose all along. Intimacy with your spouse is intended to be a safe haven, a place for you to recharge, reconnect, and be vulnerable.

Thomas and Fileta share the basics of the physical connection through a spiritual lens, and offers help to those of us working to overcome shame, deepen communication, and rediscover the beauty of intimacy as God designed it. This book isn’t just about the bedroom—it’s about emotional safety, vulnerability, and freedom and is a welcome change from the world’s view of sex that leaves us empty and trading real intimacy for a cheap imitation.

“Sex is not just physical—it’s a sacred connection that reflects God’s design for oneness.”

3. Loving Him Well: Practical Advice on Influencing Your Husband by Gary Thomas

This book is a guide for wives who want to support, encourage, and love their husbands well—without nagging, losing themselves, or carrying the full weight of the relationship.

When I first read the title, I was a little confused by the subtitle. It sounded more like a how-to book than a book about love. I was surprised to find that the book offers wisdom on how to lovingly influence your husband while staying rooted in Christ.

What I love about this book is that it doesn’t sugarcoat the real challenges of marriage—but it also doesn’t shame women for struggling. It’s full of stories, biblical insight, and gentle but clear guidance.

“Your greatest influence in your husband’s life may come not through words, but through your walk with God.”

❤️ Final Thoughts

Marriage isn’t a destination—it’s a daily invitation. An invitation to die to self, to love without conditions, and to reflect Christ in the most intimate human relationship we have. These three books go beyond offering advice—they guide us toward deep spiritual transformation. They help us better understand both God’s design for marriage and the intimate, transformative relationship He invites us into with Himself.

Whether you’re reading them on your own or with your spouse, I believe they’ll give you tools, hope, and vision for what God can do in your marriage—because He’s always at work, even in the quiet moments.
